Isaac Oliver and Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger – Queen Elizabeth 1 Rainbow Portrait

1602 A.D. In the collection of the Marquess of Salisbury. On display at Hatfield House. Attributed to Isaac Oliver and Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger. Notice the serpent on her left arm, and the human eyes and ears all over the dress. She is holding onto a rainbow shaped, transparent rod that seems to fade into her dress. The wings and sash she wears are transparent as well. This painting is full of esoteric symbolism.
